About
Thanks for checking out my blog. A little bit about myself…
Let’s take a trip down memory lane. Rewind back to about September, 2004. I would have been a month shy of 17 years old. My good friends’ stepfather owns a brilliant custom fabrication firm. The IT in the place is a bit of a mess, it is strewn with thrown-together macs and pc’s. I land my first gig.
They weren’t able to keep me occupied full-time. So I’m dropping in once in a while to keep things in line. Another friends’ step-uncle owns a pretty serious corporation writing software for police and government agencies. He gets me in the door.
With school becoming more time-consuming, a long commute (and no vehicle of my own), personal issues in the workplace, and a barrage of layoffs looming ahead, I had to stop working at Visiphor. Handing HR my resignation was one of the more difficult things I’ve had to do as a player in the work force. The decision was also something I’ve regretted since. Oh well, I take comfort in knowing that I didn’t really have a choice anyway.
For the next eight months I more or less sit around doing nothing. Gotta love being a young student living at home with no bills. I develop an interest in becoming a PHP ninja.
So begins a period of self-employment…
Well I didn’t have the experience to jump right in, but they got me started doing tech support with a company they’d outsourced to. I worked hard, and was (I think) highly respected as a get-er-done-er. I think I was more efficient than almost anybody else on the team. But it wasn’t reflecting in the pay, and I was hearing no word on what I actually wanted to do. For anyone wondering, answering tech support questions for 8 hours at a time fielded by realtors about their websites is dull work indeed. The gig lasts all of two months. I moved on..
A friend is a business consultant who happens to know a bit of IT and sells accounting software. He hires me to take care of the IT side of things while he takes care of the business side. The pay is good, but the projects aren’t constant nor consistent. About the same time I get involved with a friend of his, who does high end audio/video installation. I also pick up contracts with a small-time telephony company.
From about October, 2006 to February, 2008, I’ve learned more about myself and other people than I ever did during any other period.
Along the way I’ve made some amazing friends, and picked up a certification or two.
This blog will serve as a chronicle of my adventures from here on out.
